김병종은 남원에서 태어나 서울대 미술대학을 졸업한 후 대학원에서 동양철학을 공부한 작가이다. 학부 재학 당시 동아일보와 중앙일보 신춘문예에 당선된 그는 한국을 대표하는 화가로 자리매김하였다. 29세에 최연소로 서울대 미술대학 교수로 임용되어, 학생들을 가르치면서도 꾸준히 작업을 이어가고 있다.

그의 대표작인 ‘바보 예수’ 시리즈는 10여 년간 이어졌으며, ‘생명의 노래’ 시리즈는 15년간 작업되었다. 또한 남미, 아프리카, 중동 등지에서의 여행 경험을 바탕으로 ‘길 위에서’ 시리즈를 기법에 맞게 표현하였다. 김병종은 30대에 이미 ‘한국화의 현대화를 이끈 작가’, ‘미답의 길을 불꽃의 열정으로 개척한 작가’라는 평가를 받았다.
