카우스(브라이언 도넬리, Brian Donnelly)는 1974년 뉴저지에서 태어난 미국의 멀티 팝 아티스트로, 뉴욕의 비주얼 아트 스쿨에서 공부했다. 그는 프리랜서 애니메이터로 디즈니에서 활동하며 ‘101마리 달마시안’의 배경 작업에 참여한 바 있다. 이후 그래피티 아트에 뿌리를 두고, 1990년대 초반의 작품들 이후 클래스 올덴부르크와 무라카미 다카시의 상업주의 정신을 수용하여, 카니예 웨스트의 앨범 커버부터 나이키 운동화까지 다양한 제품을 디자인하며 독창적인 스타일을 확립했다.
특히 그의 대표 캐릭터인 ‘컴패니언’은 X자 눈을 가진 미키마우스 형상을 응용한 독창적인 디자인으로 큰 인지도를 쌓았다. 카우스는 나이키, 마크 제이콥스, 유니클로 등 여러 브랜드와 협업하며 상품과 예술의 경계를 허물었다.
그의 작품은 한국의 파라다이스 리조트에 전시되어 있으며, 상하이 유즈 미술관에서는 거대한 조각작품을 선보였다. 또한, 카우스의 대표 캐릭터 ‘컴패니언’은 2020년, 탄생 20주년을 맞아 특별한 프로젝트로 성층권까지 보내졌다. ‘우주비행사 컴패니언’ 조형물이 풍선 위성을 타고 약 2시간 동안 무중력 상태를 경험한 뒤 지구로 귀환한 것이다.
이처럼 그는 카우스는 회화, 조각, 상품, 벽화 등 다양한 분야에서 활동하며, 예술과 대중문화를 넘나드는 작품으로 세계적인 인기를 얻고 있다.
KAWS (Brian Donnelly), born in 1974 in New Jersey, is an American multidisciplinary pop artist who studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He worked as a freelance animator for Disney, where he contributed background artwork for 101 Dalmatians. Rooted in graffiti art, his early work from the early 1990s later absorbed the commercial sensibilities of artists such as Claes Oldenburg and Takashi Murakami. Through this evolution, KAWS established a distinctive style, designing everything from Kanye West’s album covers to Nike sneakers.
His most iconic character, Companion, is a highly recognizable figure inspired by Mickey Mouse, distinguished by its X-shaped eyes, and has become central to his artistic identity. KAWS has collaborated with numerous global brands, including Nike, Marc Jacobs, and Uniqlo, effectively blurring the boundaries between art and consumer products.
His works have been exhibited in Korea at Paradise Resort, and he has presented monumental sculptures at the Yuz Museum in Shanghai. In 2020, to mark the 20th anniversary of Companion, the character was sent into the stratosphere as part of a special project. The Astronaut Companion sculpture traveled aboard a balloon satellite, experienced near-weightlessness for approximately two hours, and then safely returned to Earth.
Through his activities across painting, sculpture, merchandise, and murals, KAWS continues to gain worldwide popularity with works that move fluidly between fine art and popular culture.
