작품의 분위기만큼이나 유니크한 ‘갑빠오(KAPPAO)’라는 활동명은 본명인 고명신에서 성(姓)인 ‘고(KO)’를 이탈리아식 알파벳 발음으로 읽은 데서 비롯되었다. ‘K’는 ‘갑빠’, ‘O’는 ‘오’로 소리 나는 데서 착안해 만들어진 이름이다.

갑빠오는 대학에서 사회학을 공부한 뒤 미술대학에 다시 진학해 도예를 전공했으며, 이후 이탈리아 브레라 국립미술대학(Brera National Academy)에서 장식미술을 수학했다. 이 시기를 통해 회화는 물론 사진, 공예, 조각 등 다양한 장르를 폭넓게 익혔다.

한국으로 돌아온 이후에는 흙을 주요 재료로 한 세라믹 작업에 다시 집중하며, 다양한 소재와의 결합을 통해 표현 영역을 확장해 나가고 있다. 작가는 일상의 장면들을 따뜻한 시선으로 관찰하고, 그 안에 재치와 유머를 담아 여러 매체 위에 풀어내며 자신만의 독창적인 작업 세계를 구축하고 있다.

The artist’s distinctive name, “Kappao,” is as unique as the atmosphere of the work itself. Derived from the artist’s real name, Ko Myung Shin, it originates from reading the surname “Ko (KO)” in an Italian-style alphabet pronunciation—where “K” sounds like “Kappa (갑빠)” and “O” like “O (오).”

Kappao initially studied sociology at university before returning to art school to major in ceramics. He later studied decorative arts at the Brera National Academy of Fine Arts in Italy, where he gained broad experience across painting, photography, crafts, and sculpture.

After returning to Korea, he refocused on ceramic works using clay as a primary medium, while continuously expanding his practice through combinations with diverse materials. Observing everyday scenes with a warm and attentive gaze, Kappao translates wit and humor onto a variety of surfaces, developing a distinctive artistic language rooted in daily life.
