홍익대학교에서 학사와 석사를 마치고 교수를 역임한 주태석은, 관객이 비교적 쉽게 접근할 수 있으면서도 깊은 사유를 이끄는 작품 세계를 구축해온 작가이다. 1980년대 ‘기찻길’ 연작을 통해 극사실적 화풍을 선보인 이후, 현재는 ‘자연-이미지’ 연작을 통해 대중과 소통하고 있다.

주태석은 시행착오를 거치며 빛과 그림자를 회화의 핵심 요소로 적극적으로 끌어들였다. 그는 그림자라는 허상을 통해 오히려 실상을 극대화하는 방식을 추구하며, 배경과 전면을 이중적으로 구성하는 화면을 만들어왔다. 일련의 작품에서 나타나는 색면의 분할은 빛과 그림자를 강조하기 위한 장치로, 바닥과 벽에 드리운 그림자를 부각시키며 이미지의 긴장과 밀도를 높인다. 또한 색채 대비를 통해 화면의 긴장감을 강화함으로써, 모더니즘 회화의 평면성과 사실주의적 재현에서 비롯된 환영이 한 화면 안에서 공존하는 회화적 공간을 완성해왔다. 의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 한원미술관, OCI미술관 등 주요 미술 기관에 소장되어 있다.

Joo Tae Seok, who completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Hongik University and later served as a professor, is an artist who has developed a body of work that is readily approachable for viewers while simultaneously inviting deep contemplation. After presenting a hyperrealistic style through his Railroad series in the 1980s, he has since continued to engage the public through his ongoing Nature–Image series.

By eliminating complex abstract elements and realistically depicting natural landscapes such as forests and trees, Joo’s paintings convey a sense of familiarity, allowing viewers to enter the pictorial world with ease and without psychological burden. Yet his works go beyond mere representation. They capture colors and emotions that cannot be recorded by a camera, extending hyperrealism into a new pictorial dimension. The forests in Joo Tae Seok’s paintings are quiet spaces in which the artist’s emotions are deliberately restrained, conveying the purity and beauty of nature itself and revealing an artistic journey that explores the essence of art through profound communion with the natural world.

Through repeated experimentation and trial and error, Joo has actively incorporated light and shadow as central elements of his painting practice. He seeks to heighten reality through the illusion of shadow, constructing pictorial spaces in which background and foreground are layered in a dual structure. The division of color planes evident in his works functions as a device to emphasize light and shadow, intensifying the visual density and tension of the image by highlighting shadows cast on the ground and walls. Furthermore, through heightened chromatic contrasts, he strengthens the dynamic tension of the canvas, ultimately creating a pictorial space in which the flatness of modernist painting and the illusionistic qualities of realist representation coexist within a single frame.
