호주 출신의 독창적인 아티스트 조이 무루가벨은 오클랜드 공과대학에서 예술 및 디자인 학사와 석사 과정을 마치고 광고를 전공하며 그래픽 디자이너로 활동하다가 회화 작업에 집중하게 되었다. 그는 호주에서의 일상을 작가만의 위트 있는 방식으로 풀어낸다.

캔버스 위에 유성 물감과 마카, 펜을 사용해 어디에도 구애받지 않은 드로잉과 면 분할을 감각적으로 보여주는 것이 그의 작업 특징이다. 유머와 놀이는 조이 무루가벨의 삶과 예술에서 빼놓을 수 없는 요소로, 웃음 뒤에는 가족과 친구, 문화의 영향에서 벗어나 자신만의 세계를 구축하고자 하는 갈망이 담겨 있다.

작품은 복잡하고 난해한 구성을 띠며, 인간과 인간 사이에서 발생하는 불통과 시련을 이야기한다. 한국에서 대형 작품을 중심으로 첫 개인전 ‘Bananas Down Under’를 연 이후, 중국, 런던, 암스테르담, 멕시코, 대만 등지에서 활발하게 전시와 작품 활동을 이어가고 있다.

Joi Murugavell is an Australian artist who completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Art and Design at Auckland University of Technology. After working as a graphic designer with a focus on advertising, he turned his attention fully to painting. He interprets everyday life in Australia through his own witty and playful perspective.

Using oil-based paints, markers, and pens on canvas, he freely explores drawing and spatial division without constraint. Humor and play are essential elements in Murugavell’s life and art, and behind the laughter lies a desire to build a world of his own, independent from the influences of family, friends, and culture.

His works often appear complex and intricate, addressing the lack of communication and the trials that arise between people. After holding his first solo exhibition in Korea, ‘Bananas Down Under,’ which focused on large-scale works, he has continued to exhibit and work actively in China, London, Amsterdam, Mexico, Taiwan, and other international cities.
