조장은은 이화여자대학교에서 한국화를 전공하고 동 대학원을 졸업했다. 2007년부터 현재까지 여러 차례의 개인전을 열고 다수의 단체전에 참여했다. 그는 주로 사적인 일상과 솔직한 감정을 다양한 인물을 통해 그려낸다.

전통 초상화에서 배경을 생략한 구도에 제발(題跋)의 형식과 유사한 짧은 단어나 문장을 넣어 작품의 직관적 이해를 돕는다. 강렬한 색감의 대비에 주제 의식이 살아있는 단순화된 이미지는 작품과 타자와의 소통에 힘을 실어준다. 각자의 시선에서 감정을 이입하거나 상황에 대한 해학적 판단을 할 수 있도록 집중을 유도한다.

특히 동시대를 살아가는 여성의 일상적인 서사로 공감대와 이해를 끌어낸다. 그는 산사춘, 스타벅스, 루이비통코리아와의 협업을 통해 친근한 이미지를 널리 알렸다. ‘골 때리는 스물다섯-조장은의 그림일기’, ‘엄마라서 예쁘지’라는 그림 에세이를 발간했으며 온라인에 ‘그림일기’를 꾸준히 게재하면서 다양한 매체를 통해 대중들과 적극적으로 만나고 소통하고 있다.

Jo Chang Eun majored in Korean painting at Ewha Womans University and completed her graduate studies at the same institution. Since 2007, she has held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in a wide range of group exhibitions. Her work primarily depicts private everyday life and candid emotions through diverse figures.

Drawing from the compositional tradition of omitting backgrounds in classical portraiture, she incorporates short words or sentences—similar to the format of traditional inscriptions (jebal)—to aid intuitive understanding of the work. Simplified images with strong contrasts of vivid color and a clear sense of theme strengthen communication between the artwork and the viewer, encouraging emotional projection and humorous interpretation from individual perspectives.

In particular, she evokes empathy and understanding through narratives of everyday life experienced by women living in the contemporary era. Through collaborations with brands such as Sansachun, Starbucks, and Louis Vuitton Korea, she has widely shared her approachable imagery. She has published illustrated essay books titled “A Ridiculously Wild Twenty-Five – Jo Chang Eun’s Drawing Diary” and “Pretty Because I’m a Mom,” and continues to actively engage and communicate with the public across various media by regularly posting her “drawing diary” online.
