지석철은 경남 마산에서 태어나 홍익대학교 미술대학 서양화과를 졸업한 후, 노화랑, 애플갤러리, 도시갤러리 등 다양한 전시 공간에서 개인전을 열어왔다. 그는 부재의 ‘서사’를 다루기 위해 자신의 아이콘이자 분신과도 같은 미니 의자를 지속적으로 작품 속에 등장시켜 왔다.

미니 의자는 1970년대 <반작용>에서 다루었던 쿠션을 대물림하듯 이어진 형상이다. 인간 존재를 은유하는 의자는 부재라는 명제를 통해 오히려 존재에 대한 기억과 소중함, 만남과 이별, 존재한다는 이유만으로 밀려오는 고독을 환기시킨다. 그렇게 그의 ‘의자’는 오랜 시간 “의자가 아닌 또 다른 어떤 것이 되어도 좋을” 존재의 표상으로 읽히기를 지향해 왔다.

작품 속에 등장하는 사물과 이미지에 얽힌 이야기들은 잔잔한 모노톤의 힘을 빌려 간결하게 제시되며, 낯선 조합과 이질적인 요소들의 돌연한 공존을 통해 관객으로 하여금 존재의 소중함을 다시금 인식하게 한다.

Ji Seok Cheol was born in Masan, Gyeongnam Province, and graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Hongik University. He has held solo exhibitions at various venues including Noh Gallery, Apple Gallery, and Dosi Gallery. In order to explore the “narrative” of absence, he has consistently incorporated the motif of a miniature chair—his personal icon and alter ego—into his work.

The miniature chair is a form inherited from the cushion motif featured in his 1970s work <Reaction>. As a metaphor for human existence, the chair paradoxically evokes memory and the preciousness of being through the notion of absence, calling forth themes of encounter and separation, as well as the solitude that arises simply from existing. Over time, his “chair” has aspired to be read as a symbol of existence that could become “something other than a chair.”

The objects and images that appear in his works are presented with restraint through the quiet force of a monochromatic palette. Through unexpected juxtapositions and the sudden coexistence of disparate elements, Ji Seok Cheol invites viewers to rediscover the value and significance of existence itself.
