전상우 작가는 자신의 작업을 ‘공예적’이라고 말하며, 그 안에 담긴 이야기와 의미를 함께 풀어낸다. 그의 공예적 작업은 상상력을 바탕으로 환경과 인간, 노동, 사물 사이의 관계를 탐구하며 삶과 밀접한 지점까지 깊이 들어가고자 한다.

작가는 이러한 가치와 서사를 외형에 담아 공예로 구현한다. 대표작인 ‘백자 사물 청화 책가도 도판’은 백자 접시 위에 얇은 흙으로 그림을 그려 넣는 방식으로 제작되며, 이는 붓에 흙을 묻혀 그림을 그리던 전통 기법을 응용한 것이다. 이후 그림 위에 청화 채색을 더해 입체감을 강조한다.

민화 책가도는 서양 회화의 투시나 원근법과 달리, 각각의 사물이 고유한 시점을 지닌 채 어느 하나 소홀히 다루지 않고 화면에 담긴다. 전상우는 이러한 화법을 통해 공예를 단일한 시점으로 바라보는 대상이 아닌, 공예적 가치를 지닌 소재로 재해석하고 새롭게 담아낸다.

Jeon Sang Woo describes his practice as “craft-oriented,” emphasizing both the act of making and the narratives embedded within it. Rooted in imagination, his work explores the relationships between environment, humanity, labor, and objects, seeking to engage deeply with life at its most intimate levels.

These values and stories are translated into craft through form. In his series “White Porcelain Objects: Blue-and-White Chaekgado Plates,” Jeon paints images onto porcelain plates using thin layers of clay, adapting a traditional technique in which drawings were made by loading a brush with clay. He then applies blue-and-white painting over the imagery to enhance a sense of dimensionality.

Unlike Western painting methods based on perspective and linear depth, traditional chaekgado folk paintings depict objects from multiple viewpoints, rendering each element with equal care. Through this approach, Jeon reinterprets craft not as an object viewed from a single perspective, but as a medium that carries layered craft values and meanings, re-envisioned through a contemporary lens.
