전은숙은 자신의 작품에 대해 “이것은 꽃이고, 이것은 풀이다”라고 태연히 말한다. 그러나 관람객은 화면을 가득 채운 물감의 흔적 사이로 어렴풋한 형상을 추측할 뿐, 꽃과 풀을 명확히 구분해내기 어렵다. 색과 붓질을 중심으로 전개되는 그의 평면 작업은 강한 추상성을 띤다. 작가는 머릿속에 축적된 지식과 눈앞에 펼쳐진 실재 사이의 간극을 극복하기 위한 방법으로 ‘그리기’를 선택했고, 근시의 시선으로 바라본 대상을 화폭에 담아왔다. 가까운 것은 또렷하지만 먼 것은 흐릿해지는 우리의 시각처럼, 화면 위에는 형태보다 색감이 먼저 남는다.

수많은 붓질을 통해 자아를 찾고 표현해온 그의 작업은 자전적인 서사를 품고 있다. 작품 속에 등장하는 꽃과 풀은 단순한 시각적 재현의 대상이 아니라, 그 안에 내재된 의미와 내면 세계를 탐구하기 위한 매개로 기능한다. 붓질은 곧 자신을 다듬고 정체성을 찾아가는 과정과 닮아 있다. 전은숙은 붓질을 통해 자신을 비우고, 다시 채우기를 반복한다. 그렇게 화면을 가득 메운 흔적들은 작가가 지나온 시간과 경험의 기억들을 담아내는 층위가 된다.

전은숙(b.1980)은 성균관대학교 미술학과를 졸업하고 동 대학원에서 수학했다. 2005년 이후 표갤러리, 유중아트센터 등에서 10회 이상의 개인전을 개최했으며, 표갤러리와 서울예술재단 등 국내외 주요 단체전에 참여했다. 2017년 제3회 서울예술재단 포트폴리오박람회 최우수상, 2019년 유중아트센터 제8회 유중신진작가 대상 등을 수상했으며, 2018년 포브스 코리아 선정 유망작가 25인에 이름을 올렸다. 또한 2022년 유네스코 고창 생태미술 프로젝트에 참여하는 등 활발한 활동을 이어가고 있다.

Jeon Eunsook calmly describes her works, saying, “This is a flower, and this is grass.” Yet viewers can only infer faint forms amid the dense traces of paint that fill the canvas, finding it difficult to clearly distinguish between flower and grass. Centered on color and brushwork, her paintings reveal a pronounced abstraction. As a way to bridge the gap between the knowledge stored in the mind and the reality unfolding before the eyes, the artist chose the act of painting, capturing subjects as seen through a nearsighted gaze. Just as our vision renders distant objects blurred, what remains on her canvas is not precise form but lingering color.

Through countless brushstrokes, Jeon Eunsook searches for and expresses her sense of self, embedding autobiographical narratives within her work. The flowers and grass that appear in her paintings are not mere objects of visual representation; rather, they function as elements through which she explores inner meaning and psychological landscapes. For the artist, brushwork resembles the process of refining oneself and discovering identity. Through painting, she repeatedly empties and refills herself. The layered traces that fill the canvas become imprints of her lived experiences and memories.

Jeon Eunsook (b.1980) graduated from Sungkyunkwan University with a degree in Fine Arts and continued her studies in its graduate program. Since 2005, she has held more than ten solo exhibitions at venues including Pyo Gallery and UJung Art Center, and has participated in major group exhibitions both in Korea and abroad, including those organized by Pyo Gallery and the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture. She received the Grand Prize at the 3rd Portfolio Fair of the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture in 2017 and the Grand Prize at the 8th UJung Young Artist Award in 2019. In 2018, she was selected as one of Forbes Korea’s 25 Promising Artists and participated in the 2022 UNESCO Gochang Ecological Art Project, continuing her active artistic practice.
