JEFF KOONS
제프 쿤스는 시카고 예술대학과 메릴랜드 인스티튜트 칼리지 오브 아트 (Maryland Institute College of Art) 에서 회화를 전공하였다. 그는 미국의 예술가로 대중문화를 주제로 지극히 평범한 대상을 매끈한 표면의 스테인리스 스틸 풍선 같은 이미지처럼 재생산하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 현재 뉴욕과 펜실베이니아 요코의 고향에서 거주하며 500평의 대규모 공장과 같은 스튜디오에서 100여 명의 조수들과 함께 작품을 제작하고 있는데 그는 현대 미술계 경매에서 가장 비싸게 팔린 생존 작가로 유명하다.
2019년 5월에 조형 작품 <토끼>가 미국에서 열린 크리스티 경매에서 9천 110만 달러(약 1085억원)에 낙찰되면서 현존하는 작가 중 가장 비싼 작가, 그리고 가장 비싼 예술품이 되면서 <현대미술의 왕>, <키치의 제왕> 이라는 타이틀도 얻게 되었다. 이런 쿤스의 작품에 대한 비평적인 입장은 항상 극명히 나누어지기에 세계적으로도 여론의 이슈를 받는 작가이기도 하다.
1980년대 전반에 걸쳐, 그는 장난감이나 키치한 대상들을 스테인리스나 자기 등 다양한 재료들을 사용하여 세련되고 멋진 대형 조각품으로 변모시키는 작업을 꾸준히 하였으며, 104 센티미터 크기의 스테인리스 토끼는 1980년대를 대표하는 미술품 중 하나가 되었다. 빛나는 금속 풍선처럼 보이는 이 작품은 거울 같은 표면으로 주변과 관람자들을 투영하는 키치하고 팝적인 특성을 지닌 작품이다.
그의 작품은 세계 수많은 곳에 소장되어 있는데 뉴욕의 MOMA, 영국의 TATE 갤러리, 스페인 구겐하임 뮤지엄 등 세계 유수 미술관에 소장되어 있다. 국내에는 삼성 리움 갤러리와 신세계 백화점 본관 6층 트리니티 가든에 소장되어 전시되고 있는 보라색 하트 >Sacred Heart>가 있다.
Jeff Koons studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Maryland Institute College of Art. He is an American artist best known for reproducing ordinary, everyday objects drawn from popular culture in the form of balloon-like images made of polished stainless steel. He currently lives and works in New York and in York, Pennsylvania, his hometown, where he operates a massive, factory-like studio spanning approximately 1,650 square meters, producing artworks with the help of more than 100 assistants. Koons is famous for being the most expensive living artist in the contemporary art auction market.
In May 2019, his sculptural work Rabbit was sold at a Christie’s auction in the United States for USD 91.1 million (approximately KRW 108.5 billion), making him the most expensive living artist and the creator of one of the most expensive artworks ever sold. As a result, he earned titles such as the “King of Contemporary Art” and the “Emperor of Kitsch.” Critical opinions of Koons’s work have always been sharply divided, making him a figure of ongoing global debate and public interest.
Throughout the early 1980s, Koons consistently transformed toys and kitschy objects into refined, monumental sculptures using materials such as stainless steel and porcelain. The 104-centimeter stainless steel Rabbit became one of the most iconic artworks representing the 1980s. Resembling a shiny metallic balloon, this piece features a mirror-like surface that reflects its surroundings and viewers, embodying a kitschy yet pop aesthetic.
Koons’ works are held in numerous major collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Tate Gallery in the United Kingdom, and the Guggenheim Museum in Spain. In Korea, his purple heart sculpture Sacred Heart is part of the collections of the Leeum Samsung Museum of Art and is also on display at the Trinity Garden on the 6th floor of the Shinsegae Department Store Main Branch.
