Javier Calleja is a contemporary artist based in Málaga, Spain, who has developed a distinctive visual language across drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation. His practice is characterized by experiments with scale, perspective, and spatial perception, often overturning viewers’ expectations or creating optical illusions to generate new sensory experiences.

One of the most recognizable images in Calleja’s work is a boy with large, expressive eyes. Originating from the artist’s emotions and personal experiences, this figure has evolved from drawing into painting, sculpture, and various objects, becoming a signature symbol of his artistic universe. Standing at the threshold between childhood and adolescence, these characters convey innocence, curiosity, and subtle emotional nuances through their enlarged eyes and simplified expressions. Short phrases occasionally inserted into the works create contrast with these expressions, adding both humor and tension.

Calleja has recently held solo exhibitions at the Seoul Arts Center (2024), the Unicaja Cultural Center in Málaga (2023), and the Parco Museum in Tokyo (2022), among others, and has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including at Le Consortium in Dijon and CICA Museum in Vancouver. His works are included in major collections such as CAB Burgos and CAC Málaga in Spain, as well as Long Museum, He Art Museum, Powerlong Museum, and K11 Art Foundation.
