얀 쾨헤르만은 독일 뤼덴샤이드에서 태어나 함부르크 국립조형예술대학에서 순수미술을 전공한 작가이다. 그는 또한 함부르크대학교 국제 섬머아카데미 펜티먼트의 학장으로 활동하며, 세계 여러 나라의 지원자들에게 회화, 드로잉, 조각, 설치, 사진, 디자인 등 다양한 미술수업을 제공하고 있다.

최근 작업에서는 과거의 기억과 경험을 바탕으로 창조적인 직관을 보여주는 대규모 공공 설치물들이 주를 이룬다. 그는 작품을 통해 내부와 외부, 사생활과 공공, 과학과 허구, 디스토피아와 유토피아 사이의 균열을 조명하며 대중이 어떻게 반응하는지 관찰한다. 예를 들어, 함부르크의 갤러리 공간을 물로 채운 뒤 그 위로 고층 빌딩 모형을 공중에 띄우거나, 26m 길이의 자전거 터널을 뒤셀도르프에 그대로 재현하여 관람객이 마치 함부르크에 실제로 있는 듯한 경험을 하게 만든다.

그는 대형 프로젝트 외에도 빛을 활용한 오브제, 영상 프로젝터가 내장된 미니어쳐, 몽환적인 설치 작업 등 다양한 실험적인 작업을 선보이고 있다. 그의 작품은 독일 현대미술관, 함부르크 미술관 등 주요 미술관에 소장되어 있으며, 베를린, 상하이, 서울, 도쿄 등지에서 국제적으로 활동하고 있다.

Jan Köchermann was born in Lüden­sch­eid, Germany, and studied Fine Arts at the Hamburg State Academy of Fine Arts. He is also the director of the international Summer Academy Pentiment at the University of Hamburg, where he offers various art courses in painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, and design to international students.

His recent works, which are often large-scale public installations, reveal creative intuition based on past memories and experiences. Köchermann focuses on exploring the fractures between the interior and exterior, private and public, science and fiction, dystopia and utopia. In some of his works, such as filling a gallery space in Hamburg with water and installing floating models of skyscrapers above, or recreating a 26-meter-long bicycle tunnel from Hamburg in Düsseldorf, he provides visitors with an immersive experience, making them feel as though they are physically present in Hamburg itself.

Beyond large-scale projects, Köchermann presents experimental works including objects using light, miniatures with built-in video projectors, and dreamlike installations. His works are housed in major collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Germany and the Hamburg Museum of Art. He is active internationally, exhibiting in Berlin, Shanghai, Seoul, Tokyo, and other cities.
