황영성은 1941년 강원도 철원에서 출생해 광주에서 성장했다. 광주사범학교, 조선대 미술학과를 졸업한 후 1967년 두 명의 간호사를 그린 ‘병동의 오후’로 국전에서 입상했다. 그 후 70년대에만 국전에서 6차례 특선, 7차례 입선하며 중앙 화단에 공식적으로 데뷔해 일관된 작품 세계를 선보여 왔다.

1980년 서울 롯데화랑에서 전시를 시작으로 국내외 유수 갤러리와 미술관에서 수많은 전시를 했다. 1990년대 이후에는 모더니즘 성향을 보이다 2000년대에는 다채로워진 색채와 추상적이고 암호화된 화법이 절정에 이르러 조형적 호기심과 탐구욕이 폭발한다. 이는 멕시코, 프랑스 등 해외에서의 경험을 바탕으로 우리 민족의 이야기에 더해 인류 보편적인 이야기로 표현하려는 의지가 담긴 것으로 해석된다.

1987년 조선대 정교수로 임명되어 2006년 퇴임하기까지 후학 양성에 힘썼다. 조선대 미대 학장, 광주비엔날레 조직위원 등을 역임했으며 현재 전업 작가로 왕성하게 활동 중이다. 그의 회화를 한 단어로 꼽자면 ‘가족’이다. 60여 년간 일관되게 천착해 온 ‘가족’은 소박한 시골집 가족에서부터 대자연의 생명들로 확대되고 마침내 세상 만물의 공생을 담는 ‘우주 가족’으로 확장된다.

Hwang Young Sung was born in 1941 in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province, and grew up in Gwangju. After graduating from Gwangju Teachers College and the Department of Fine Arts at Chosun University, he received recognition at the National Art Exhibition in 1967 with *Afternoon in the Ward*, a painting depicting two nurses. Throughout the 1970s alone, he won six Special Selections and seven Acceptances at the National Art Exhibition, officially debuting on the central art scene and consistently presenting a coherent artistic vision.

Beginning with an exhibition at Lotte Gallery in Seoul in 1980, he has held numerous exhibitions at prominent galleries and museums in Korea and abroad. From the 1990s onward, his work showed modernist tendencies, and in the 2000s it reached a peak with increasingly vibrant colors and abstract, coded modes of expression, marking an explosion of formal curiosity and exploration. This development is interpreted as reflecting his intention to extend narratives of Korean identity into universal human stories, informed by his experiences in countries such as Mexico and France.

Appointed a full professor at Chosun University in 1987, he devoted himself to educating younger generations until his retirement in 2006. He also served as Dean of the College of Fine Arts at Chosun University and as a member of the Gwangju Biennale Organizing Committee, and continues to be actively engaged as a full-time artist. If his painting were to be summed up in a single word, it would be “family.” Over more than sixty years, his sustained exploration of “family” has expanded from modest rural households to the lives of nature itself, ultimately evolving into a vision of a “cosmic family” that embraces the coexistence of all beings in the world.
