황란 작가는 미국 뉴욕에 있는 스쿨 오브 비주얼 아트를 졸업하고 뉴욕에서 활동하다가 지금은 뉴욕과 서울을 오가며 다양한 시도와 작품 제작에 매진하고 있다. 크리스터 비즈(beads)나 단추를 박아 완성된 형상들은 화려하기 그지없다.

그러나 그 이면에는 단추 하나하나를 원하는 색깔(일반적인 레드와는 다른 핑크 레드)로 입하고, 손톱에 피멍이 들도록 망치질해야 하는 고된 노동이 숨어 있다. 이런 진한 과정을 거친 그녀의 작품은 화려한 인생을 만들기 위해 피나는 노력을 하는 우리네 삶의 모습과 닮았다. 작가는 핀을 두드림으로 삶에 대한 성찰과 그의 작품을 대하는 사람들의 마음을 다독여 명상과 치유의 세계로 유도한다.

황란 작가는 두바이 레일라 헬러 갤러리, 미국 플로리다 베이커 박물관 등 세계 곳곳에서 여러 개인전과 단체전에 참여한 바 있으며 그의 작품은 현재 페이스북 본사, 중국 데지 아트 미술관, 미국 휴스턴 박물관 등 세계 여러 곳에 소장되어 있다.

Ran Hwang graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York and initially established her career there. She now works actively between New York and Seoul, devoting herself to diverse artistic experiments and the creation of new bodies of work. The forms she creates—meticulously constructed with crystals, beads, or buttons—are dazzling and ornate at first glance. Yet behind this brilliance lies an intense process of labor: each button is individually dyed to achieve a precise hue—often a distinctive pink-red rather than a conventional red—and hammered into place by hand, a task so physically demanding that it can leave her fingernails bruised.

Having undergone such arduous processes, Hwang’s works resonate with the realities of our own lives, mirroring the relentless effort and perseverance required to create a brilliant and meaningful existence. By repeatedly hammering pins into the surface, the artist reflects on life itself, gently soothing the hearts of those who encounter her work and guiding them toward a realm of meditation and healing.

Ran Hwang has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world, including at Leila Heller Gallery in Dubai and the Baker Museum in Florida, USA. Her works are held in major international collections, such as Facebook Headquarters, the Dezhi Art Museum in China, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among many others.
