황문성은 홍익대학교 미술대학원을 졸업하고 다수의 개인전과 단체전에 참여해 왔다. 여백과 긴장, 그리고 이완이 공존하는 그의 작업에는 섬세함과 투박함이 함께 드러난다. 투명한 질감 위에 생략과 숨김을 더해 더 많은 여운을 담아낸다.

“내가 포착하고자 하는 것은 자연 또는 자연스러움이다. 인위적인 것도 오랜 시간이 쌓이면 자연의 모습을 띠게 된다.”라는 그의 말처럼, 사진의 피사체는 하나의 실재이지만 그것을 어떻게 담아내느냐는 전적으로 작가의 시선에 달려 있다. 그는 카메라의 프레임 안으로 우연의 예술이 들어올 때까지 기다리는 과정을 작품 활동으로 여긴다.

과감한 생략과 절제를 통해 사진만의 독특한 문법을 구축해 가는 그의 작품은 문학으로 치면 산문보다는 시에 가깝다. 그는 사진뿐만 아니라 페인팅에서도 동일한 개념을 유지하며, 선과 형태, 색채로 시각적 이미지를 만들어 ‘사진 회화’라는 독특한 영역을 확장해 가고 있다.

Hwang Moon Sung graduated from Hongik University’s Graduate School of Fine Arts and has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. His work exists in the space between emptiness and tension, where delicacy and roughness coexist. Through transparent textures combined with omission and concealment, he creates images that leave a lingering resonance.

As he states, “What I seek to capture is nature, or naturalness. Even artificial things eventually take on the appearance of nature as time accumulates.” While the photographic subject itself is a single reality, how it is framed depends entirely on the artist’s perspective. For Hwang, artistic practice lies in waiting until the art of chance enters the camera’s frame.

Through bold omission and restraint, he develops a distinctive visual language of photography that is closer to poetry than prose. Maintaining the same conceptual approach in painting as in photography, he constructs visual images through line, form, and color, expanding into a unique field that can be described as photographic painting.
