의재 허백련(許百鍊, 1896~1977)의 장손자인 직헌 허달재(許達哉)는 그림과 차밭 등 가업을 전수한 화가이자 의재문화재단 이사장이다. 허련(許鍊, 1808~1893)에서 남농 허건(許楗, 1907~1987), 그리고 허백련으로 이어지는 허씨 가문은 추사 김정희로부터 시작된 남종화(南宗畵)의 맥을 계승한 집안으로 잘 알려져 있다. 허달재의 화경은 할아버지 허백련의 화풍에 깊이 뿌리를 두고 있으며, 특히 1980~1990년대 초반의 산수와 사군자 작품에서는 그 영향이 뚜렷하게 드러난다.

그러나 1990년대 중반 이후 그는 자신만의 시각으로 대상을 단순화하며 독자적인 화풍을 구축해 나갔다. 구름만으로 하늘을 표현한 운무화에서는 강인한 건필이 두드러지고, 먹과 물감이 흘러내리는 추상적 배경 위에 새와 달, 오리, 인간 형상을 배치하며 글자와 그림을 결합하는 실험적인 작업을 선보였다. 이러한 작품들은 뉴욕과 파리 등 해외에서 더욱 큰 주목을 받았다.

만개한 매화, 포도, 과일, 꽃 등을 소재로 한 그의 작업은 문인화의 전통에 뿌리를 두면서도 모던함과 장식성을 강조한 화법으로 하나의 틀을 완성하며, 새로운 한국화의 발전에 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 그는 베이징을 중심으로 중국에서 여러 차례 개인전을 열었으며, 그의 작품은 대한민국 청와대, 아부다비 왕족 컬렉션, 중국 상해미술관, 국립현대미술관 서울 등 여러 기관에 소장되어 있다.

Huh Dal Jae, also known as Jikheon Huh Dal Jae, is the eldest grandson of Uijae Huh Baekryeon (1896–1977) and is both a painter who has inherited his family’s artistic and tea-farming traditions and the chairman of the Uijae Cultural Foundation. The Huh family line—beginning with Huh Ryeon (1808–1893), followed by Namnong Huh Geon (1907–1987), and culminating in Huh Baekryeon—is renowned for carrying on the lineage of Namjonghwa (Southern School painting) originating from Kim Jeong-hui. Huh Dal Jae’s artistic foundation is firmly rooted in his grandfather’s style, particularly evident in his landscapes and Four Gentlemen paintings from the 1980s to the early 1990s.

From the mid-1990s onward, however, he began simplifying subjects through his own perspective, establishing a distinctive visual language. His cloud-and-mist landscapes depict skies rendered solely through clouds with powerful, dry brushstrokes, while more experimental works feature abstract backgrounds of flowing ink and pigment combined with birds, moons, ducks, human figures, and calligraphic text. These works gained even greater recognition abroad, particularly in cities such as New York and Paris.

Drawing on motifs such as blooming plum blossoms, grapes, fruit, and flowers, Huh Dal Jae’s paintings are grounded in the tradition of literati painting while emphasizing modern sensibility and decorative qualities. This mature style has contributed significantly to the evolution of contemporary Korean painting. He has held numerous solo exhibitions in China, particularly in Beijing, and his works are included in the collections of the Blue House of Korea, the Abu Dhabi Royal Collection, the Shanghai Art Museum, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul.
