홍지연은 홍익대학교 미술대학 서양화과와 동 대학원 회화과를 졸업했다. 1996년 ‘낯선 풍경’이라는 첫 개인전을 시작으로 인사아트센터, 한전프라자, 토탈미술관 등에서 여러 차례의 개인전과 단체전, 아트페어에 참가했다. 국내뿐 아니라 홍콩, 싱가폴, 뉴욕, 파리, 런던, 마드리드 등 세계 각지의 미술관 및 갤러리에서 기획전에 참여한 바 있다.

그는 민화를 모티브로 현대적인 소재들을 혼합해 새로운 작품을 만들어내고 하나의 장르에 머물지 않고 평면, 입체, 무대미술 등 다양한 분야에서 활동하며 왕성한 창작 욕구를 보여주고 있다. 과거와 현재를 소재로 색의 대비와 조화, 대상의 초현실적인 배치를 통해 화면에 긴장을 불어넣는다. 이런 시도는 현대화된 민화와의 분명한 차이를 드러낸다.

몬트리올 현대미술관, 슈에무르 뉴욕, 제주 롯데 아트 빌라스, 주스페인 대한민국 대사관, 하나은행, 아모레퍼시픽 등에서 작품을 소장하고 있다.

Hong Ji Yeun graduated from the Department of Western Painting at the College of Fine Arts, Hongik University, and completed her graduate studies in painting at the same institution. Beginning with her first solo exhibition titled “Strange Landscape” in 1996, she has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions and art fairs at venues such as Insa Art Center, KEPCO Plaza, and Total Museum of Contemporary Art. She has also taken part in curated exhibitions at museums and galleries around the world, including in Hong Kong, Singapore, New York, Paris, London, and Madrid.

Drawing inspiration from traditional minhwa, she creates new works by combining contemporary subjects, while demonstrating an expansive creative drive that moves beyond a single genre into two-dimensional works, sculpture, and stage design. By juxtaposing past and present through contrasts and harmonies of color and the surreal placement of subjects, she introduces a sense of tension into her compositions. These approaches clearly distinguish her work from conventional modernized minhwa.

Her works are held in collections including the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, Choeumore New York, Lotte Art Villas Jeju, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Spain, Hana Bank, and Amorepacific.
