서양화가이자 판화가인 홍재연은 1980년대 초 혜인사를 찾아 팔만대장경을 접한 이후 판화의 매력에 깊이 몰입하게 되었다. 수많은 경전의 내용을 하나의 판에 함축적으로 담아내어, 보는 이로 하여금 이해와 명상의 순간을 선사하는 점이 깊은 인상을 남겼다고 한다.

판화는 미술의 본질적인 장르임에도 불구하고 종종 예술의 아웃사이더로 분류되지만, 홍재연은 전통 판화가 회화에 못지않은 깊은 만족감을 준다고 말한다. 한국판화가협회 회장을 역임한 그는 판화에 대한 남다른 애착을 바탕으로, 지금까지도 꾸준히 전통 판화 기법으로 작업을 이어오고 있다.

미니멀한 조형성과 절제된 색감에서 느껴지는 깊은 아우라는 그의 작품을 관통하는 특징이다. 홍재연은 20여 회가 넘는 개인전과 다수의 단체전을 통해 지속적인 작품 활동을 펼쳐왔으며, 경희대학교에서 미술학사를, 교육대학원에서 미술교육 석사를 마친 후 경기대학교 미술학부 교수로 재직하며 후학 양성에도 힘써왔다.

Hong Jae Yeon, a painter and printmaker, became deeply immersed in the art of printmaking after visiting Haeinsa Temple in the early 1980s and encountering the Tripitaka Koreana. He was profoundly impressed by how the vast content of countless scriptures could be condensed onto a single printing block, offering viewers moments of understanding and contemplation.

Although printmaking is a fundamental genre of fine art, it is often regarded as an outsider within the art world. Hong believes, however, that traditional printmaking provides a sense of fulfillment equal to that of painting. Having served as president of the Korea Printmakers Association, he maintains a deep affection for the medium and continues to produce his works through traditional printmaking techniques.

The subtle aura that emerges from the minimalist forms and restrained color palette is a defining characteristic of his work. Hong Jae Yeon has held over twenty solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions, sustaining an active artistic practice. He earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Kyung Hee University and a master’s degree in art education, and served as a professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Kyonggi University.
