허욱은 파리국립미술학교 회화과를 졸업한 작가로, ‘첨첨(添添)’ 시리즈라 불리는 고유한 작업 방식을 지속적으로 전개하고 있다. 첨첨은 더할 첨(添) 자 두 개를 결합한 단어로, ‘계속해서 더한다’는 의미를 지니며 그의 작업 태도와 구조를 상징한다. 이는 화면 위에 요소를 반복적으로 보태며 축적해 나가는 방식으로, 작가의 사유와 조형 언어를 명확히 드러낸다.

다양한 색채의 직선과 곡선, 그리고 경계 지어진 면들은 캔버스를 가로지르며 허욱만의 독특한 조형 언어를 형성한다. 그의 작업은 수학의 나눗셈처럼 직선으로 면을 분할해 질서를 부여하고, 그 위에 곡선을 삽입해 의도적인 무질서를 더한다. 이렇게 나뉘고 교차된 면과 경계는 평면 위에서 긴장감 있는 구조로 공존한다.

허욱은 ‘입체 같은 평면, 평면 같은 입체’라는 개념을 작업의 근간으로 삼아 회화와 설치, 공공미술의 경계를 넘나든다. 개인전과 프로젝트, 그룹전을 통해 국내는 물론 뉴욕, 런던, 시드니, 베이징 등 해외에서도 지속적인 주목을 받아왔으며, 국립현대미술관과의 공공미술 프로젝트를 다수 진행했다. 또한 맥캘란(싱글 몰트 위스키 브랜드), IWP(I WAS PLASTIC) 등과의 협업을 통해 건축적 회화와 설치미술의 영역을 확장해 나가고 있다.

Heo Wook graduated from the painting department of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and has developed a distinctive working method known as the “Cheomcheom (添添)” series. The term combines two Chinese characters meaning “to add,” referring to a process of continuously layering and accumulating elements. This concept encapsulates the artist’s approach, in which forms and colors are repeatedly added to construct meaning and structure.

His compositions are formed through straight and curved lines, segmented planes, and diverse colors that traverse the canvas to create a unique visual language. Much like mathematical division, Heo structures order through straight-line partitions, then introduces curves to insert intentional disorder. These divided surfaces and boundaries coexist on the picture plane, generating tension and rhythm.

Based on the idea of “planes that feel three-dimensional and volumes that feel flat,” Heo Wook moves fluidly between painting, installation, and public art. Through solo exhibitions, projects, and group shows, his work has gained recognition not only in Korea but also internationally in cities such as New York, London, Sydney, and Beijing. He has led multiple museum projects with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and has actively collaborated with brands such as The Macallan and IWP (I WAS PLASTIC), expanding his spectrum as an installation artist who bridges architectural painting and public art.
