한상윤은 동국대학교에서 한국화를 전공하고 일본 교토 세이카대학교에서 정치 만화를 전공한 독특한 이력을 지닌 아티스트다. 교토 세이카대학원 재학 중 우연히 참여한 ‘만화와 미술 크로스 컬처’ 전시를 계기로 만화가에서 아티스트로 전환하는 중요한 계기를 맞이했다.

현재 그는 ‘가장 한국적인 팝아트’를 탐구하며, 동양화의 전통 재료인 한지 위에 독창적인 채색 기법을 적용해 현대적이고 세련된 이미지를 만들어낸다. 정치 풍자를 전공한 배경 덕분에 그의 작품에는 해학과 유머가 자연스럽게 스며 있으며, 일본 유학 시절 풍자 동물 만화가 요시토미 야스오의 영향을 받아 ‘돼지’라는 캐릭터를 주요 모티브로 삼아왔다.

초기에는 돼지를 통해 현대인의 물질적 욕망을 풍자했으나, 어느 순간 웃고 있는 돼지를 발견하며 주제는 풍자에서 행복으로 전환되었다. 한상윤의 돼지는 탐욕적 존재가 아니라 가족이나 친구처럼 친근하고 인간적인 모습으로 그려진다. 그는 2005년 일본 텐노지학관 전람회 우수상, 2010년 제8회 서울미술대상전 대상 등을 수상했으며, 다수의 개인전과 단체전, 해외 아트페어를 통해 ‘피그팝(Pig Pop)’ 연작을 선보여왔다. 2019년 상하이 개인전과 북경에서의 2인전을 통해 국제 무대에서도 주목받고 있다.

Han Sang Yoon studied Korean painting at Dongguk University and later majored in political cartoons at Kyoto Seika University in Japan, forming a distinctive artistic background. While attending graduate school at Kyoto Seika University, his participation in the exhibition “Comics and Art Cross Culture” became a pivotal moment, marking his transition from cartoonist to contemporary artist.

Today, he explores what he calls “the most Korean form of pop art,” applying innovative coloring techniques to traditional hanji paper to create refined and contemporary imagery. Influenced by his background in political satire, his works are infused with wit and humor. During his years in Japan, he became deeply inspired by satirical animal cartoonist Yoshitomi Yasuo, which led him to adopt the pig as a central and recurring motif.

While his early works used pigs to satirize material desire in modern society, his focus gradually shifted toward images of joyful and content pigs. Han Sang Yoon’s pigs are not greedy caricatures but warm, human-like figures that resemble family members or friends. He received the Excellence Award at the Tennoji Gakkan Exhibition in 2005 and the Grand Prize at the 8th Seoul Art Awards in 2010. Through numerous solo and group exhibitions and international art fairs, he has presented his Pig Pop series, gaining international recognition with solo exhibitions in Shanghai and a two-person exhibition in Beijing in 2019.
