하신혁은 전통적인 도자 양식인 ‘기(器)’의 형식을 따르되, 그 기능적 역할을 배제하고 오브제로서의 의미에 주목하는 작가이다. 그는 도자를 오브제적 형태로 해석하기 위해 작품이 만들어지는 과정 자체를 탐구하며, 그 안에 내재된 시간성에 대해 이야기하고자 한다.
작가는 시간이 흐르며 과거의 시간이 축적되는 현상을 흙이라는 매체를 통해 하나의 조형 언어로 기록하는 방법을 모색해 왔다. 도자는 단순한 결과물이 아닌, 쌓이고 이어지는 시간의 흔적을 담아내는 매개체로 기능한다.
하신혁은 자신만의 색감을 담은 흙을 손으로 길게 말아 쌓아 올리는 코일링 기법을 통해 작품을 빚는다. 아래에서 위로, 혹은 위에서 아래로 명도에 섬세한 변주를 준 흙을 반복적으로 쌓아 올리며, ‘시간성’이라는 관념적인 개념을 시각적으로 구현해 낸다.
Ha Shin Hyeok works with the traditional ceramic form of the “gi” (vessel), yet deliberately removes its functional purpose, reinterpreting it as an object. His practice focuses on the process of making itself, exploring how ceramics can be understood as object-based forms that embody time.
Using clay as his primary medium, Ha investigates ways to record the accumulation of time—how past moments gradually layer upon one another as time flows. In his work, ceramics serve not merely as finished forms, but as physical records of duration and continuity.
He shapes his works through a coiling technique, stacking long, hand-rolled strands of clay infused with his own nuanced color palette. By building layers either from bottom to top or top to bottom, subtly modulating tonal values, Ha visually materializes the abstract concept of temporality through sculptural form.
