에로(Erró)는 콜라주 작업으로 잘 알려진 아이슬란드의 팝 아티스트이다. 그는 광고, 만화, 포스터 등 다양한 대중 매체의 이미지를 재조립하며, 로이 리히텐슈타인, 앤디 워홀, 제임스 로젠퀴스트와 비교되곤 한다. 특히 유명 이미지와 영화 장면을 독특한 방식으로 재구성해 새로운 시각을 제시한다.

그의 작품은 처음에는 미로처럼 복잡하게 느껴지지만, 가까이 들여다볼수록 인간의 희극적 요소와 풍자를 담고 있다. 에로의 예술적 과정은 방대한 자료를 수집하고 선별·혼합·변형하여 체계적인 새로운 풍경을 만들어내는 데 초점을 둔다.

1932년 아이슬란드 슬라프슈비크에서 태어난 그는 오슬로 아카데미에서 판화와 회화를 공부했고, 1950년대 중반부터 본격적으로 작품을 전시하기 시작했다. 2000년 아이슬란드 의회로부터 명예 예술가 스티펜드를 받았으며, 이듬해 레이캬비크에는 그의 작품을 헌정하는 박물관이 개관했다. 2010년 파리 센터 퐁피두에서 열린 대규모 회고전은 그의 50여 년 예술 여정을 조명하며 큰 주목을 받았다. 현재 그의 작품은 프라하 체코 국립미술관, 부다페스트 루드비히 현대미술관, 레이캬비크 미술관 등에 소장되어 있다.

Erró Guðmundur is an Icelandic Pop artist renowned for his collage-based works. Reassembling images drawn from advertising, comics, posters, and other mass-media sources, his practice is often compared to that of Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and James Rosenquist. By reconfiguring iconic images and scenes from films, he offers strikingly new perspectives.

At first glance, his compositions can feel labyrinthine, yet on closer inspection they reveal a humorous and satirical view of humanity. Erró’s artistic process centers on collecting, selecting, combining, and transforming visual materials to construct coherent new landscapes.

Born in 1932 in Slafsheiði, Iceland, he studied printmaking and painting at the Oslo Academy and began exhibiting his work in the mid-1950s. In 2000, he received an honorary artist stipend from the Icelandic Parliament, followed by the opening of a museum in Reykjavík dedicated to his work the following year. A major retrospective marking fifty years of his artistic career was held at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2010. His works are currently held in collections including the National Gallery Prague, the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art in Budapest, and the Reykjavík Art Museum.
