Damien Hirst rose to prominence almost overnight as one of the most talked-about contemporary artists after co-organizing the exhibition Freeze in 1988 with fellow students from Goldsmiths, University of London. In his first solo exhibition in 1991, he became an icon of British popular culture by presenting The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, a work featuring a dead shark suspended in a glass tank filled with formaldehyde and connected to a motor to create movement.
