한국화의 채색화 분야에서 독자적 화풍을 이룬 천경자 화백은 ‘한국의 대표적인 여성 화가’로 꼽힌다. 일본 동경여자미술전문대학을 졸업하고 이미 재학 시절에 조선미술 전람회에 출품해 여러번 입선하였으며 1955년에는 대한 미술 협회전에서 대통령상을 수상하였다.

특히, 꽃과 여인을 주된 소재로 하여 ‘꽃과 여인의 화가’라고도 불려진다. 여인의 한(恨)과 환상, 인간의 꿈과 고독을 파격적인 소재와 함께 강렬한 색채를 통해 표현하면서 환상주의적인 화풍이 돋보이는 것이 특징이다.

천경자 작가의 작품 속 특유의 고독하고 몽환적이며 애틋한 눈빛의 여인은 자신의 모습을 투영한 것으로 알려져 있으며, 화려한 색채와 독특한 구성으로 신비스러운 분위기를 자아낸다. 작가는 더 많은 이야기를 화폭에 담고자 1969년부터 남태평양, 유럽, 아프리카, 중남미, 인도 지역 등을 일흔이 넘는 나이까지 세계여행을 하며 이국적 인물화는 물론 풍물화 작업을 활발히 하면서 더욱 강렬한 색채와 범접할 수 없는 천경자만의 독자적인 세계관을 구축하였다. 1998년 소장하고 있던 전 작품을 서울시립미술관에 기증하여 현재까지 ‘천경자실’에 상설 전시되고 있다.

Chun Kyungja, who established a distinctive style within the tradition of Korean colored ink painting (chaesaekhwa), is widely regarded as one of Korea’s most representative female artists. She graduated from the Tokyo Women’s College of Fine Arts in Japan and, while still a student, was repeatedly selected for exhibition at the Joseon Art Exhibition. In 1955, she was awarded the Presidential Prize at the Korea Art Association Exhibition.

Best known for her depictions of flowers and women, Chun is often referred to as “the painter of flowers and women.” Her work is characterized by a strikingly fantastical style, through which she expresses women’s han—a deep, unresolved sense of sorrow—alongside fantasy, human dreams, and existential solitude. These themes are conveyed through bold subject matter and intense, vivid colors. The women portrayed in her paintings, with their solitary, dreamlike, and poignantly tender gazes, are widely understood as projections of the artist herself. Combined with her rich palette and distinctive compositions, they evoke an aura of mystery and emotional depth.

In her desire to capture ever more stories on canvas, Chun embarked on extensive travels beginning in 1969, journeying across the South Pacific, Europe, Africa, Central and South America, and India—continuing well into her seventies. Through these travels, she actively produced both exotic figure paintings and genre scenes, further intensifying her use of color and solidifying an incomparable artistic worldview uniquely her own.

In 1998, Chun Kyungja donated her entire body of work to the Seoul Museum of Art. Since then, her works have been permanently displayed in the dedicated Chun Kyung-ja Gallery, where they remain on view today.
