Choi Yong Wook is a contemporary artist known for his works centered on the dalhangari, the traditional Korean moon jar. By blending the aesthetics of Korean tradition with a modern sensibility, he reinterprets the moon jar’s understated beauty for today’s viewers. Born in Seoul in 1964, Choi graduated from the Department of Painting at Hongik University in 1991. While studying art in New York, he visited the Korean gallery at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he encountered a moon jar that profoundly resonated with him. Simultaneously reminiscent of himself yet serene and dignified, the jar became the primary motif of his artistic practice.

In Choi’s paintings—particularly his well-known Karma series—the moon jar is not merely an image but a vessel rich with stories, fractures, and histories embedded within its intricate craquelure. The jar appears to embrace the passage of time, pain, and imperfection with warmth and generosity.
