조성원은 ‘박스’라는 오브젝트를 중심으로 다양한 예술 창작 활동을 전개하는 작가이다. 유년 시절 농사를 짓던 부모님 아래에서 자란 그는, 농작물을 담던 종이 박스를 유일한 장난감 삼아 처음 예술적 상상과 창작을 경험했다.

종이 박스를 통해 시작된 그의 작업은 순수했던 기억과 감성에 기반을 두고 있으며, 지금까지도 박스는 그의 작업 세계를 관통하는 핵심 오브젝트로 사용되고 있다. 조성원은 박스로 형(形)을 만들기 이전에 먼저 ‘새로운 이야기’를 구상하는데, 그 재료는 기억과 트라우마, 그리고 사회적 환경으로부터 출발한다.

‘새로운 이야기’가 완성되면, 그는 가상의 세계를 현실 세계로 구현하기 위해 다양한 물질을 다루는 연구와 습득의 과정을 거쳐 작업을 완성한다. 이러한 과정을 통해 박스는 단순한 오브젝트를 넘어, 개인의 서사와 사회적 맥락이 교차하는 조형적 언어로 확장된다.

Cho Seongwon is an artist whose practice centers on the use of boxes as a primary object for artistic creation. Growing up in a farming family, his only toy as a child was the cardboard box used to store agricultural produce, through which he first encountered artistic imagination and making.

Rooted in the innocence and memories of his early experiences, the box has remained a central element in his work to this day. Before shaping the box into a physical form, Cho begins by constructing a “new narrative,” drawing from personal memory, trauma, and the surrounding social environment.

Once this narrative is fully formed, he devotes time to researching and mastering various materials in order to translate an imagined world into reality. Through this process, the box transcends its function as a simple object, becoming a sculptural language that intertwines personal stories with broader social contexts.
