홍익대학교 동양화과와 중국 칭화대학교 회화과에서 중서예술정신비교연구로 박사과정을 마친 조세랑의 작품은 ‘의심’과 ‘불안’, 그리고 ‘경계’라는 내면의 감정에서 출발한다. 그는 눈에 보이는 실제 풍경을 그대로 재현하기보다, 어떤 풍경을 마주하는 순간 함께 떠오르는 이미지와 감정을 화면 속에 겹쳐 담아낸다.

때로는 이야기를 들으며 떠오른 과거의 기억 속 풍경이 현재의 장면과 교차하며 하나의 화면을 이루기도 한다. 이러한 방식으로 완성된 작품들은 작가가 스스로 느끼는 의심과 불안, 경계를 인식하고 받아들이는 과정이자, 이를 해소하고 위로받는 사유의 기록이라 할 수 있다.

조세랑의 작업은 관객에게도 동일한 메시지를 전한다. 의심과 불안 속에서 스스로를 지나치게 경계하며 힘들어하기보다, 작품을 통해 자신을 돌아보고 위로받으며 편안해지기를 바라는 마음이 담겨 있다.

Cho Se Rang, who completed doctoral studies in Comparative Studies of Eastern and Western Artistic Spirit at the Department of Painting at Tsinghua University after graduating from the Department of Oriental Painting at Hongik University, presents works rooted in themes of doubt, anxiety, and inner boundaries. Rather than depicting visible reality as it is, he layers the images and emotions that arise at the moment of encountering a landscape onto the scene itself.

At times, landscapes drawn from past memories—recalled while listening to a story—intersect with present scenes to form a single composition. Through this serial process, the artist comes to recognize, confront, and gradually resolve his own feelings of doubt and anxiety, finding consolation within the act of painting.

His works ultimately extend this sense of comfort to the viewer as well. They convey a quiet message, encouraging audiences not to be overwhelmed by self-imposed boundaries born of doubt and unease, but instead to find moments of reflection, reassurance, and calm through the experience of the artwork.
