천우선은 선의 반복적 구성을 통해 독특한 질감을 지닌 면을 형성하고, 그 틈 사이로 입체물의 내부가 투시되는 조형 작업을 전개한다. 이러한 조형 요소는 일반적인 입체 조형의 부피감과는 다른 시각적 경험을 가능하게 한다.

천우선의 작업에서 핵심이 되는 요소는 ‘틈’이다. 틈은 형태를 구성하는 방식이자 수단이며, 동시에 목적이 된다. 틈은 공간을 명확히 분리하지 않고 내부와 외부의 경계를 모호하게 만든다. 시각적으로는 내부와 외부가 구분되지만, 그 구분은 단지 형태를 규정할 뿐 틈의 존재 앞에서는 의미를 상실한다.

작가는 물리적 공간으로서의 항아리 형태보다 반복적인 채움과 비움이 생성되는 지점에 주목한다. 그의 작품은 비워져 있어야 채울 수 있고, 다시 채우기 위해서는 비워져야 하는 유(有)와 무(無)의 순환적 사고를 담아낸다. 유와 무는 존재와 비존재를 모두 포함하며, 입체의 외부를 구성하는 가는 선들을 통해 시각적으로 구현된다.

Cheon Woo Seon develops sculptural works in which repetitive linear structures create textured surfaces, allowing glimpses into the interior of three-dimensional forms through their gaps. These formal elements offer an alternative mode of expression that differs from the conventional sense of volume in sculpture.

At the core of Cheon’s practice lies the concept of the “gap.” The gap functions simultaneously as method, means, and purpose of form-making. Rather than separating space, it blurs the boundary between interior and exterior. Although the inside and outside may appear visually distinct, such distinctions merely define form and lose significance in the presence of the gap.

Rather than focusing on the vessel as a physical container, the artist emphasizes the points where filling and emptying repeatedly occur. Through this process, Cheon expresses an abstract contemplation of being and non-being—where emptiness enables fullness, and fullness necessitates emptiness. These intertwined concepts of presence and absence are articulated through the fine lines that construct the exterior of the sculptural form.
