배종헌은 실험적 작업으로 잘 알려진 한국의 서양화가이자 설치 미술가이다. ‘콘크리트 산수 작가’로 불리는 그는 오래된 콘크리트 벽의 균열에서 풍경을 연상하여 이를 산수화처럼 그려낸다. 물감을 겹겹이 쌓고 긁어내는 독특한 기법을 통해 산수를 완성하며, 텍스트, 드로잉, 사진, 영상, 설치, 판화 등 다양한 매체와 형식을 넘나들며 작업을 이어가고 있다.

그의 작품은 현시대가 콘크리트 문명에 뿌리를 두고 있다면, 그 안에서 아픔 속에 피어난 꽃과 같다고 할 수 있다. 길바닥 틈에 뿌리 내린 잡초가 잘 가꾼 정원의 꽃보다 거룩하게 보인다고 느끼는 작가는 자연적 체험과 사회적 경험을 각기 다른 작품에 결합하는 시도를 계속해왔다.

자연을 모방하여 재구성된 인공적 도시성과 그 안에서 찾을 수 있는 소멸, 흔적, 환경, 생태 등이 그의 작업의 주요 주제이다. 배종헌의 작품은 아르코미술관, 경기도미술관 등 여러 주요 미술관에 소장되어 있다.

Bae Jong Heon is a highly regarded experimental painter and installation artist in Korea. Known as the “Concrete Landscape Artist,” he draws inspiration from the cracks in old concrete walls, transforming them into landscape paintings reminiscent of traditional Korean landscape painting, or “sansui.” His distinctive style of scraping layered paint to complete the landscape is just one example of his multifaceted approach, working across text, drawing, photography, video, installation, and printmaking.

His works can be seen as flowers blooming amidst pain, representing the urban concrete civilization of modern times. The artist believes that weeds growing unkempt in the cracks of sidewalks appear more sacred than the flowers carefully cultivated in a well-maintained garden. Through this philosophy, Bae combines natural and social experiences in his artwork, blending them into unique expressions across different pieces.

Key themes of his work include the artificial urbanity restructured from nature, and within that, the themes of disappearance, traces, environment, and ecology. Bae Jong Heon’s works are held in the collections of the Arko Art Center, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, and several other prominent art institutions.
