아르튀르 루이스 피자(Arthur Luiz Piza)는 브라질 출신의 저명한 미술가로, 주로 조각과 판화 분야에서 활동했다. 1928년 브라질 상파울로에서 태어나 안토니오 고미드(Antonio Gomide, 1895–1967)에게 미술을 배운 후, 1951년 파리로 이주해 전후 몽파르나스에서 본격적인 예술 활동을 시작했다.

파리에서 그는 프리드랜더(Johnny Friedlaender, 1912–1992)와 함께 구리 조각, 에칭, 음각 기법을 깊이 연구하며 자신만의 조형 언어를 구축했다. 그의 작품은 상파울로 비엔날레, 류블랴나 비엔날레, 그렌첸 인쇄 비엔날레, 카셀 도큐멘타, 살롱 데 레알리테 누벨 등 국내외 주요 전시에 여러 차례 소개되었으며, 다양한 수상 경력을 통해 국제적인 명성을 쌓았다.

피자는 브라질과 프랑스를 중심으로 개인전을 활발히 열었고, 특히 1953년부터 1991년까지 파리에서만 12회의 개인전을 개최했다. 1958년 이후에는 조각, 도자기, 보석, 부조, 콜라주 등 다양한 매체로 작업 영역을 확장했으며, 1960년대에는 조각 예술을 대표하는 작가로 자리매김했다. 파리를 기반으로 활동하던 그는 2017년 5월, 89세의 나이로 생을 마감했으며, 그의 작품은 뉴욕 현대미술관(MoMA), 구겐하임 미술관, 프랑스 국립도서관, 퐁피두 센터 등 세계 유수의 미술관에 소장되어 있다.

Arthur Luiz Piza was a prominent Brazilian artist who worked primarily in sculpture and printmaking. Born in São Paulo in 1928, he studied art under Antonio Gomide before relocating to Paris in 1951, where he became actively involved in the postwar Montparnasse art scene.

In Paris, Piza studied copper engraving, etching, and intaglio techniques alongside Johnny Friedlaender, developing a distinctive formal language grounded in materiality and structure. His works were presented at numerous international exhibitions, including the São Paulo Biennale, Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts, Grenchen Print Biennale, Documenta in Kassel, and the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, earning him wide recognition and multiple awards.

Piza held numerous solo exhibitions in Brazil and France, including twelve solo shows in Paris between 1953 and 1991. From 1958 onward, he expanded his practice to encompass sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, reliefs, and collage, and by the 1960s had established himself as a leading figure in contemporary sculpture. He continued to live and work in Paris until his passing in May 2017 at the age of 89. His works are held in major museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and the Centre Pompidou.
